If you sell online in Hungary, the real platform question is not "Shopify vs WooCommerce" — it's Shopify vs Shoprenter. Shoprenter powers over 5,000 Hungarian webshops and is the country's leading cloud-based e-commerce platform. Yet almost every English-language comparison ignores it, and most Hungarian articles never tally the true cost of running Shopify with Hungarian logistics, payments and price-comparison sites bolted on.

This comparison fixes that. Every price below was checked on the official pricing pages in July 2026, in the currency each company actually publishes. No invented benchmarks — just verifiable numbers and an honest read on where each platform breaks down.

The short answer

Shoprenter is the pragmatic choice for a store whose customers are overwhelmingly Hungarian: Barion payments, GLS shipping labels, Árukereső product feeds and Hungarian-language everything are part of the product, not plugins you have to assemble. Shopify is the better long-term platform if you plan to sell across borders, want world-class themes and apps, or expect to outgrow the Hungarian market. The wrong choice in either direction costs real money — so let's get specific.

Shopify pricing (verified July 2026)

Shopify publishes localized prices per country; the reference USD prices below come from its official pricing page. Shopify Payments is available in Hungary since 2025, with payouts in EUR or HUF.

Two costs people forget. First, the third-party gateway fee: if you process payments through Barion or another external provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its own platform fee on top of the gateway's processing rate. Second, apps: replicating the Hungarian integrations that Shoprenter includes natively can add $10–30/month before you sell anything.

Shoprenter pricing (verified July 2026)

Shoprenter publishes flat monthly prices in HUF (plus 27% ÁFA) with no revenue commission. Annual prepayment brings a discount of roughly 17%. USD conversions below are approximate at July 2026 exchange rates (~400 HUF/USD).

All prices are net of ÁFA (27% VAT). The Bronze plan at under 6,000 Ft/month (~$15) is remarkably cheap for a fully hosted store with SSL, Hungarian support and basic integrations — something Shopify cannot match at its $39 entry point.

The Hungarian integration test: Barion, GLS, Árukereső

This is where comparisons are won or lost for Hungarian merchants. Here's the feature-by-feature breakdown.

On Shoprenter, this entire stack is a configuration task: flip switches in the admin, paste API keys, done. On Shopify, it's an assembly project with multiple apps from different developers, each adding monthly cost and a separate point of failure.

Language and localization

Shoprenter is Hungarian-first by design: admin, documentation, invoicing, NAV-compatible e-invoicing and support all assume a Hungarian operator. For a non-technical shop owner or employees who don't work in English, this alone can decide the matter.

Shopify's storefront and checkout translate into Hungarian without trouble, but the admin is a different story — as of July 2026, Hungarian does not appear on Shopify's official list of supported admin languages. Day-to-day order management, settings and app interfaces will be in English.

International scalability

Reverse the scenario and the verdict flips just as hard. Shopify offers multi-currency selling, localized storefronts, international domains, duties estimation on higher plans and an ecosystem of thousands of apps and themes built for cross-border commerce. Growing from a Hungarian shop into a European or global brand on Shopify is a well-worn path.

Shoprenter was built for the Hungarian market and it shows — in the best possible way domestically, and in a limiting way internationally. Multi-language and multi-currency support exist on the Gold plan, but the add-on ecosystem, logistics integrations and community knowledge are concentrated in Hungary. The platform is part of the IdoSell group (acquired 2021), which gives it a Central European footprint, but it is not a global e-commerce platform in the way Shopify is.

Honest cons of each

Shoprenter:

• Limited theme selection: 13 templates versus Shopify's hundreds of free and paid themes.
• Feature gating by tier: API access, multi-language, loyalty points and advanced reporting are locked to Gold (39,990 Ft/mo).
• Smaller app ecosystem: 200+ integrations is strong for Hungary, but a fraction of Shopify's thousands.
• International tooling is thin — you can sell abroad, but the ecosystem doesn't scale with you.
• Storage caps (5/20/40 GB) can pinch media-heavy catalogs.

Shopify:

• Real cost is plan + apps: replicating Shoprenter's built-in Hungarian stack typically adds $10–30/month in app subscriptions or manual configuration.
• No Hungarian admin language; support is in English.
• Third-party gateway fee (2%/1%/0.6%) punishes you for preferring Barion or SimplePay over Shopify Payments.
• USD pricing exposes you to exchange-rate drift on a core business cost.
• Shopify Payments in Hungary does not yet support POS in-person payments.

Verdict by scenario

• You sell almost exclusively to Hungarian customers: choose Shoprenter. Native Barion, GLS, Árukereső and Hungarian-language everything beat Shopify's flexibility you won't use. Bronze at 5,990 Ft/month covers a small catalog with all the essentials.
• Hungarian base today, serious international ambitions: choose Shopify. Migrating platforms mid-growth is painful and expensive; if exports are the plan rather than the dream, start on the platform built for them.
